What in The World? by Donna Stewart Response from The World Newspaper to What in The World
We reported a few days ago about The World Newspaper's decision to dissolve all walking paper routes and going strictly to motor routes, putting many of our County's youth out of work and without an income to help their families. Cindy Rawling from The World immediately caught wind of this article and attacked our page as unprofessional and just a little blog. She brought a few other World employees or former employees with her, including Teresa Pedersen-Reeves to form a group attack. We deleted the article and it was reposted as a Letter to the Editor from Teresa Coney, whose son Trevor delivered The World Newspaper. We received word that Teresa's son was being called into The World Newspaper office due The World Newspaper's claims that, by Teresa writing a Letter to the Editor Trevor must report in person to discuss "slander and breach of contract". A Letter to the Editor is now slander and breach of contract? I would warn anyone writing Letters to the Editor to The World Newspaper to beware if your views differ from theirs, because they apparently feel they are above the law and can sue you!
Teresa Coney states that "The termination of contract letter my son received says the last day of work for him will be Saturday, June 8th." After this date, The World Newspaper will be going to strictly motor routes. She went on to add, "We have already spoken to some of his loyal customers and they will be cancelling when he gets laid off. They were only subscribing to support him. I haven't talked to one person who is happy with their subscription rates or the content of the paper anyhow." Trevor was to report to Cindy Rawlings after school yesterday. When he arrived home, his mother informed him of what was happened, the allegations, and that he had to report to Cindy Rawlings. Obviously a very mature young man, Trevor responded with "" just call her and tell her to terminate my contract, I don't want to work for them anymore anyway". And so that is exactly what Teresa did. "I am so proud of him for understanding and standing up for what he believes!" she says. "I think I did a pretty good job Now we can go door to door and let all of his old customers know what happened to him. Hopefully enough people drop The World when the changes happen and it throws them under. I don't wish anyone to lose their income but if you work for such a shady company, you almost deserve it." Staff attempts to contact Rawlings for comment were unsuccessful. Perhaps she does not feel her time is well spent speaking to what she considers an unprofessional little blog. In closing, I would urge Coos County residents to consider hiring young people like Trevor for summer work, because there will be many young people like Trevor who will be out of a job come June 8th. There will also be many adults who cannot afford a car out of a job on June 8th. So I ask you, is this how we encourage our youth to work hard? Is this how we build our community? Is this the example we want set for the young people in our County? Should we be telling them that Free Speech no longer exists unless you are The World Newspaper? Should we tell them to gag their parents lest they lose their jobs? What kind of example has The World Newspaper set for the youth of our area? What kind of example has The World Newspaper set for all Coos County residents? And, more importantly, is their kind of bias and discrimination worth over $150 a year? Food for thought. But I would imagine that they will be experiencing an influx of subscription cancellations. Who will they blame then? Probably an unprofessional little blog like CCN. |
I recently wrote an article called "What In The World" when it was brought to our attention that The World Newspaper is dissolving all Youth Routes and Foot Routes and will be using only motor routes. Many of us thought this was very shallow in many ways, as many of the teens who had worked for The World Newspaper did so to help their families financially. And many more worked foot routes in order to save money for a car. They will no longer be able to do that. (You may refer to the artcle in the Notes section).
Immediately after this article was published, I received an email from Cindy Rawlings of The World Newspaper, issuing their usual threats: "Please take down your note on CCN FB Page. You do not have correct information and you can reach me at my work phone which is published daily in The World and was in the signature line on the letter addressed to Trevor Coney. I'd be happy to review our actual contract language and explain how our business operates. Your post is slanderous and your source Teresa Coney is either lying to you or me, as she stated that she did not give permission to take her original message from private to public. I have reported the abusive posts to Facebook and I will continue to report if this post remains active. You "quote" me with words I never used, and I do have hard copies of the previous posts including my remarks. Remove the post and post no further regarding me or The World. Thank you. 541-269-1222 ext 248." Not only did she call my friend, and a friend to many of us, Teresa Coney, a liar, she also threatened to continue to report the CCN page to Facebook for something she considers abusive. But, alas, we know that anyone who dares speak out against The World is considered abusive. This is why we alerted our readers that The World Newspaper was trying desperately to shut down the CCN page. It obviously has not worked, and I am sure that those working at Facebook and receiving the "abuse reports" are quite dumbfounded. Needless to say, if The World Newspaper does not like what you do, what you say, or considers you competition, they want to make you disapear. And this is the kind of mindset that delivers the news. Even so, even though we are still here, a back up is available if they continue to send their trolls over here to report us. We have done nothing wrong, and certainly not as harmful and intentionally biased as they have done to organizations such as ORCCA. This is just to let you all see what exactly we must deal with from this corporation. A billion dollar corporation who feels threatened by a little Facebook page, who takes jobs from teens and those who cannot afford a car, and who can dish it out all day long but cannot take the slightest bit of criticism. Nope, nothing wrong there, right? |
